2015 The Orchard Cabernet Sauvignon
Not so many years ago, McLaren Vale to Willunga was well known for almond production, with 5000 acres of orchards across the plains to the sea. There were several varieties grown, such as Johnston, Chellaston and Californian Paper Shells. With the rising reputation of McLaren Vale as a wine region, the vines won out and the almond orchards were replaced.
For our part, this almond orchard was the perfect site and soil for a special vineyard of Cabernet. All that remains of the orchard is an avenue of snowy white blossoming almond trees, a reminder of an industry gone by.
Colour Rich purple and red in colour.
Nose The bouquet displays classic cassis with a hint of violets and dried herbs.
Palate The palate dispays generous and rich cassis fruit over mid-weight elegance. The mouth filling flavours are well balanced with appealing herbal tones and savoury firm tannins. The result is a generous and approachable wine with excellent depth of flavour.
The winter of 2015 was cold and relatively dry, with July and August being quite low rainfalls. In November we had warm and still weather which made ideal conditions for the grapes to set. We then moved into a hot and very dry period leading into February and the vines started to show a bit of stress. Then we had a very beneficial rain event pouring 32mL into the soil, which freshened the vines without any disease issues. The crop levels were up on previous years across the region, but the flavours are concentrated and showing lots of ageing potential.
