Concentrated. Robust. Characterful. The qualities of the winemaker reflect in the quality of the wine. Because every wine that’s made by Maxwell is, indeed, Maxwell-made. The unique result of one man’s vision, tenacity and unbending standards. Since 1979, Mark Maxwell has come to understand the unique terroir of our limestone hill. And extract every characteristic nuance for every estate wine, regardless of price. Little wonder James Halliday noted our consistent excellence – in red wines particularly – and accorded us his five red-star rating.

"A snapshot of a
season that will
never be repeated"

 Wine View Vale

At Maxwell we view a bottle of wine as more than a drink. It is the culmination of a diversified range of talents. From the Head Winemaker to cellar hand. From cooper to farmer, viticulturist to glassmaker, designer and more in-between. Most of all it is a snapshot of a season that will never be repeated and in this way every bottle of wine is truly unique.

2017 Team Picked Tempranillo

Trial rows of Tempranillo on the Maxwell Estate are always the first grapes to ripen for the season. This gives the whole team reason to get out into the vineyard, getting vintage underway each year.

This Tempranillo is an early drinking style with fresh flavours of raspberry, cherries and soft tannins.

Tasting Notes

Colour Deep garnet.

Nose Lifted red fruits, cherries and dried herbs.

Palate Varietal raspberry and cherry flavours entwined with savoury characters of cedar and granite. Chalky tannin cradles the fruit and complements subtle oak characters and gentle acidity.

Vintage Notes

The winter of 2016 was very wet, with Pedler Creek flooding into some of our lower lying vineyards, a once in a decade event which refreshes the soils, allowing salts to be flushed away. From August to early January conditions were quite dry, allowing healthy restrained growth across the estate and average crop levels have resulted in high quality grapes. After many years of earlier starts to harvest, 2017 went back to the predictable 1st of March. The weather conditions were warm without any extreme heat events but a slightly wet period towards the end of April gave us a need to pick the last of the Cabernet and Grenache vineyards before any mould issues arose.
